Seoul: An impeachment motion against Prosecutor General Shim Woo-jung was reported Thursday to the plenary session of the National Assembly led by the Democratic Party (DP) over his alleged role in former President Yoon Suk Yeol’s failed martial law bid. The decision came shortly after the Supreme Court overturned a lower court’s acquittal of DP presidential candidate Lee Jae-myung on charges of election law violation.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the DP accused Shim of colluding with Yoon in the “unconstitutional and illegal” emergency martial law declaration on December 3, as well as the armed insurrection riot that involved mobilizing martial law troops and police forces. The impeachment motion reflects the DP’s stance against actions they deem unconstitutional.
Under current law, an impeachment motion must be addressed within a timeframe of 24 to 72 hours after being reported to the plenary session. It can either be put to a vote or referred to the Legislation and Judiciary Committee for further review. The DP has opted to send Shim’s impeachment motion to the judiciary committee for further examination.
