Seoul: Jun Sang-soo, a former senior official of the National Assembly Secretariat, has met former U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to seek support for his bid to lead the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), Jun said Thursday.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Jun, who previously served as the deputy secretary general for legislative affairs at the Assembly, conveyed to Ban that he has formally registered as a candidate for the IPU's top post. Ban expressed support for Jun's candidacy during their meeting.
The IPU, headquartered in Geneva, is an organization dedicated to facilitating parliamentary diplomacy and promoting democratic governance. The organization, which comprises 181 member countries, is set to elect a new secretary general for a four-year term at its general assembly scheduled in Istanbul next April.
Jun currently serves as an adviser to Samsung Fire and Marine Insurance and has a long history of public service since entering the field in 1992. His roles at the National Assembly Secretariat have included heading the planning and coordination office and the proceedings bureau.
