Jang Sung-woo Wins Gold in Men’s 1,000m Short Track at Winter Asiad

Harbin: Jang Sung-woo captured the gold medal in the men’s 1,000-meter short track speed skating event at the Asian Winter Games in China on Sunday, marking his second gold of the competition. Jang edged out his teammate Park Ji-won for the 1,000m title at Heilongjiang Ice Events Training Center Multifunctional Hall in Harbin. Liu Shaoang of China claimed the bronze.

According to Yonhap News Agency, a second Chinese skater in the final, Sun Long, lost his balance and fell over the final stretch, finishing fifth. Both Liu and Sun were leading in the early portion of the nine-lap race. After three laps, Jang positioned himself between Sun and Liu, with Park trailing in fourth. Park attempted to overtake on the outside but failed to close the gap.

Jang executed an inside move to surpass Liu and take the lead with two laps left. In a chaotic finish, Park and Sun made brief contact, causing Sun to fall and nearly collide with other skaters. Park narrowly avoided the crash as Jang crossed the finish line first.

Jang’s victory was South Korea’s second short track gold medal on Sunday, following Choi Min-jeong’s win in the women’s 1,000m event, contributing to the country’s sixth gold overall. On Saturday, Jang secured bronze medals in the men’s 500m and 1,500m events. He also received a gold medal in the mixed 2,000m relay after participating in Friday’s semifinals.
