Seoul: Jeju Air Co., South Korea's leading low-cost carrier, announced its acquisition of a seventh B737-8 aircraft and revealed plans to purchase an additional one by year-end. The company currently operates 43 passenger aircraft, 12 of which are owned, including five B737-800NG passenger jets.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Jeju Air is focused on establishing sustainable growth infrastructure by enhancing price competitiveness and strengthening flight safety through fleet modernization efforts. In line with these objectives, the airline signed a memorandum of understanding with Boeing in March to implement a competency-based training and assessment system for pilots. This program is designed to improve pilots' responses to emergency situations.
The airline's recent initiatives come in the aftermath of a tragic accident involving one of its B737-800 aircraft on December 29, which crashed during a belly landing at Muan International Airport. The accident resulted in the loss of 179 lives out of 181 passengers on board.
