Seoul: K-pop girl group 2NE1 will take the stage for the halftime show for an upcoming football match in Seoul pitting Tottenham Hotspur against Newcastle United, match organizers said Monday.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Coupang Play, a South Korean streaming platform, announced the veteran quartet as the halftime performer for the second match of the annual Coupang Play series between Tottenham and Newcastle at 8 p.m. on Aug. 3 at Seoul World Cup Stadium in Seoul.
2NE1 burst onto the K-pop scene in 2009, achieving significant success with a series of hit singles. The group's second studio album, "Crush," debuted at No. 61 on the Billboard 200 in 2014. It marked a milestone as the best-selling K-pop album and the highest-charting K-pop album on the Billboard chart up to that point.
The group split in November 2016 but reunited to perform at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in April 2022. Following this, the group embarked on the "Welcome Back Tour," which has seen sold-out shows across its Asian stops.
In addition to the halftime show featuring 2NE1, Newcastle is scheduled to play Team K League, composed of star players from the South Korean league, on July 30 at Suwon World Cup Stadium in Suwon, approximately 30 kilometers south of Seoul. Another K-pop girl group, Ive, was previously announced as the halftime performer for the first match.
Tottenham, led by South Korean captain Son Heung-min, recently claimed the UEFA Europa League title in May. Newcastle secured the English Football League Cup title. Coupang Play indicated that both clubs will present their trophies before the Seoul match, with further details on the presentation to be released later.
Tickets for the priority presale last Thursday, reserved for subscribers to Coupang Play's "Sports Pass," sold out in 15 minutes, as reported by Coupang officials. The general ticket sale will begin at 8 p.m. Friday on Coupang Play's official app.
