Seoul: KakaoTalk, the mobile messenger service operated by Kakao Corp., emerged as the most widely used social media platform in South Korea last month, as revealed by data on Wednesday.
According to Yonhap News Agency, KakaoTalk achieved 48.19 million monthly active users (MAUs) in August, ranking highest among social media services in the country.
Instagram followed in second place with 27.41 million MAUs, while Band, a communication app by Naver Corp., secured third place with 17.08 million MAUs. Naver Cafe recorded 9.3 million MAUs. TikTok and X reported 8.32 million and 7.49 million MAUs, respectively.
In terms of usage time, TikTok Lite led the rankings. South Korean users spent an average of 18 hours and 57 minutes per user on TikTok Lite in August. This was followed by Instagram with an average usage time of 18 hours and 1 minute, TikTok with 17 hours and 41 minutes, and X with 14 hours and 58 minutes. Meanwhile, KakaoTalk users spent an average of 11 hours and 25 minutes on the platform.
