Seoul: The Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) is set to resume its season this Thursday with an unusual four-game series, as the 10 clubs come back from their extended All-Star break. The break, which started last Friday, will conclude on Wednesday, allowing teams to prepare for a packed schedule stretching from Thursday to Sunday.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the Hanwha Eagles currently lead the standings with a record of 52-33-2, maintaining a 4 1/2-game advantage over the LG Twins, who stand at 48-38-2. The Eagles have achieved six consecutive victories, becoming the first team this season to reach 50 wins. Historically, teams achieving this milestone have a strong chance of securing both the regular-season title and the Korean Series championship.
In the upcoming series, the Eagles will face the KT Wiz in Suwon, located approximately 30 kilometers south of Seoul. The Wiz, currently in fifth place with a record of 45-41-3, are part of a competitive middle-tier grouping, with the fourth to eighth place teams separated by just three games.
The Kia Tigers, the 2024 champions, lead this middle group in fourth place with a record of 45-40-3. They will host the NC Dinos in Gwangju, about 270 kilometers south of Seoul. The Dinos, who are in seventh place with a 40-40-5 record, finished the first half of the season with a four-game winning streak.
Samsung Lions, who have slipped from fifth to eighth place with a 43-44-1 record, will play against the Kiwoom Heroes in Daegu. The Heroes are currently at the bottom of the league standings with a 27-61-3 record.
The SSG Landers, in sixth place with a 43-41-3 record, will host the Doosan Bears, who are ninth with a 36-49-3 record. Meanwhile, the LG Twins will face the Lotte Giants in a critical matchup between the second and third-ranked teams.
As the season resumes, several players are also chasing KBO records. Hanwha Eagles' Cody Ponce leads the league with 161 strikeouts and is on track to break the single-season strikeout record. Ponce, who is undefeated at 11-0, is also close to setting the record for most consecutive wins by a pitcher from the start of a season.
Lotte Giants' Victor Reyes aims to surpass his own single-season record of 202 hits. Reyes currently leads the league with 122 hits and is on pace for 197 this year. Samsung Lions' Lewin Diaz, who leads with 29 home runs, is striving to become the first foreign player to hit 50 home runs in a season.
Additionally, SSG Landers' Choi Jeong, the all-time home run leader with 506, is nine home runs away from achieving his 10th consecutive 20-home run season, potentially setting a new record in KBO history.
