Seoul: Kim Keon Hee, the wife of former president Yoon Suk Yeol, faced intense questioning by special prosecutor Min Joong-ki's team on August 6, amidst a flurry of allegations including involvement in the Deutsch Motors stock manipulation case, meddling in political matters, and connections to a shaman figure known as Geonjin Beopsa.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Kim is the first former first lady to publicly stand as a suspect before the press, drawing significant attention and criticism. Her husband, Yoon Suk Yeol, is already in detention, adding to the national embarrassment. Upon her arrival at the special prosecutor's office in central Seoul, Kim expressed regret, stating, "I am truly sorry for causing concern as someone like me, a nobody," which seemed to be a gesture of humility rather than an admission of her involvement.
Despite her claims of being a "nobody," released audio recordings before the 2022 presidential election suggested otherwise. In these recordings, she was heard making assertive statements and appeared to have played a significant role in Yoon's campaign. When controversies arose regarding her falsified resume and alleged role in the Deutsch Motors scheme, Kim addressed the media in December 2021, apologizing for her past actions and committing to fulfilling her duties as a presidential spouse.
However, her promises were quickly overshadowed by further controversies. In September 2022, a hidden camera captured her accepting a luxury gift from Korean American pastor Choi Jae-young, raising questions about her sense of public responsibility. Furthermore, early in Yoon's presidency, evidence suggested that the Unification Church attempted to send her lavish gifts through Geonjin Beopsa.
In July 2024, Kim faced questioning over the Deutsch Motors case in a security facility rather than the main prosecutors' office, with the prosecutor general being informed only 10 hours later. She was eventually cleared of charges, a decision that led to public distrust in the prosecution.
Additionally, Kim has been scrutinized for allegedly attempting to reroute the Yangpyeong Expressway towards family-owned land and her supposed links to the Sambu Construction stock case. While some allegations may be overstated, no modern first lady has encountered such a barrage of scandals. The special counsel is urged to conduct a thorough investigation to ensure accountability for any unlawful actions.
