(LEAD) McDonald’s Korea halts sales of french fries due to concerns about ‘substandard’ frozen potato

McDonald’s Korea, the local unit of fast food giant McDonald’s Corp., said Thursday it has been forced to halt sales of french fries because of concerns about “substandard” frozen potato.

In a statement, McDonald’s Korea said, “Due to an unexpected issue within our supply chain, we are temporarily unavailable to provide French Fries.”

“We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience, and we will do our best to resume sales as soon as possible,” it said.

McDonald’s Korea had not specified what the supply chain issue was, but the company later told Yonhap News Agency that sales of french fries were suspended due to “concerns about substandard frozen potatoes.”

McDonald’s Korea did not give details, including when it would resume sales of french fries.

McDonalds’ Korea previously suspended sales of french fries in 2021 and 2022 due to global supply chain issues in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Last month, McDonald’s Korea raised the prices of 16 menu items by an average of 2.8 percent.

The price of the
signature Big Mac increased from 6,900 won (US$5.20) to 7,200 won.
