Gyeongju: President Lee Jae Myung and Japan's new Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi reached a consensus on enhancing bilateral cooperation during their first summit on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting. The leaders emphasized the importance of working together amidst rapidly evolving global dynamics.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the meeting marked a significant step in Seoul-Tokyo relations, particularly in light of Takaichi's recent election and her known stance on historical issues between the two nations. Despite concerns, the talks focused on future-oriented cooperation, as both leaders acknowledged shared challenges and the need for collaboration.
President Lee highlighted the importance of strengthening ties between the two neighboring countries, noting their similarities and shared challenges. "Amid the rapidly changing international dynamics and trade environment, I think South Korea and Japan, neighboring countries that share many similarities, must strengthen future-oriented cooperation more than ever," Lee stated.
Prime Minister Takaichi expressed hope for closer cooperation, emphasizing the strategic importance of the bilateral relationship and trilateral coordination with Washington. She noted the significance of the 60th anniversary of normalized relations between South Korea and Japan, advocating for stable and beneficial development of their ties.
During the 40-minute meeting, historical disputes were sidestepped in favor of discussing practical cooperation in areas such as advanced technologies, economic security, and cultural exchanges. The leaders agreed on the value of active shuttle diplomacy to ensure continued collaboration.
Lee expressed his desire for future meetings to be held in regional cities, suggesting South Korea's next visit to Japan, while Takaichi looked forward to their next encounter. The exchange of symbolic gifts further underscored mutual respect, with Lee gifting Korean cosmetics and dried seaweed, and Takaichi presenting Go stones from Kamakura.
The summit between Lee and Takaichi serves as a barometer for future relations, setting a collaborative tone for addressing both domestic and international issues through shared experiences and cooperation.
