Seoul: President Lee Jae-myung and U.S. President Donald Trump agreed to swiftly resolve tariff negotiations in their first phone talks, Lee's office announced. During the 20-minute conversation, Trump congratulated Lee on his election victory, while Lee emphasized that the South Korea-U.S. alliance remains the foundation of Seoul's foreign policy, presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung stated in a written briefing.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the two leaders agreed to work toward swiftly reaching a mutually satisfactory agreement on South Korea-U.S. tariff negotiations. The presidential office further noted that to achieve this, both leaders agreed to encourage a tangible outcome in working-level talks.
Lee's first conversation with Trump came just two days after he assumed office, marking the end of months of political and diplomatic uncertainty. This transition followed the ousting of former President Yoon Suk Yeol in April over his unsuccessful martial law bid.
