Seoul: President Lee Jae-myung met with National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-shik and leaders of political parties Wednesday, calling for their cooperation in governing the country.
According to Yonhap News Agency, following a swearing-in ceremony at the National Assembly, President Lee engaged in a luncheon meeting with Speaker Woo, Park Chan-dae, acting leader of the ruling Democratic Party (DP), Kim Yong-tae, interim leader of the main opposition People Power Party (PPP), and leaders of four minor parties. During the meeting, Lee stressed the necessity of concessions and compromises to craft policies that have widespread agreement and improve the lives of citizens.
Lee underscored the importance of respectful dialogue and constructive competition, urging an end to "war-like politics filled with hostility." He expressed his intentions to maintain close contact with political leaders as part of his governance strategy moving forward.
The Democratic Party, which is liberal, holds 171 of the 300 seats in parliament, and with the support of progressive minor parties, this number increases to 188. This majority is expected to provide Lee with strong legislative backing for his policy initiatives. Meanwhile, the conservative People Power Party holds 107 seats.
