Cairo: President Lee Jae Myung on Thursday emphasized South Korea's democratic resilience during a meeting with the Korean community in Egypt. He recounted the Asian nation's recovery process following the aftermath of his predecessor's martial law debacle nearly a year ago.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Lee described the impeachment and ousting of former President Yoon Suk Yeol, followed by the establishment of his administration, as a "miracle-like" period in history. He aimed to reassure the Korean community that the country's democracy has been restored. "It is a miracle-like (part) of history even in the (broader) context of world history -- one forged by the people of the Republic of Korea," Lee stated during the meeting in Cairo, referring to South Korea's official name.
Lee, who assumed office in June after a snap election caused by Yoon's removal, promised that Koreans abroad would no longer need to worry about domestic issues. "How frustrated and distressed Koreans in Egypt must have felt watching what was happening in the Republic of Korea," he expressed. "But you have witnessed a remarkable turnaround."
He further mentioned that South Korea's democratic resilience was a topic of discussion in his summit with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi earlier that day. Lee noted that El-Sisi was impressed by the Korean people's ability to restore democracy peacefully.
