New york: President Lee Jae Myung is set to host an investor relations session in New York on Thursday to outline his government’s economic policy agenda and attract capital inflows to South Korea.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Lee will convene the “Korea Investment Summit” with global investors and Korean corporate leaders on Wall Street as part of efforts to help create forward momentum for the Korean stock market, his office said. It will be joined by Finance Minister Koo Yoon-cheol.
The engagement on the final day of his trip to attend the U.N. General Assembly comes as Lee has vowed to turn the “Korea discount” into a “Korea premium” for global investors. He is expected to present reform measures aimed at sustaining the recent rally in the Korea Composite Stock Price Index, which has repeatedly hit record highs in recent weeks on the back of emerging optimism over policy changes and a tech rally.
On Monday, Lee met BlackRock CEO Larry Fink to discuss cooperation in artificial intelligence (AI) and renewable energy, culminating in the signing of a memorandum of understanding to build AI data centers as part of Seoul’s ambition to become Asia’s AI hub.
The president also met with U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Wednesday to review the latest developments in trade negotiations. He reiterated the need for a currency swap arrangement to cushion the impact of Seoul’s US$350 billion investment pledge made in July to secure a trade deal.
