Seoul: South Korean battery maker LG Energy Solution Ltd. (LGES) has announced a new partnership with General Motors Co. to jointly develop prismatic battery cells. This collaboration aims to enhance battery technologies and materials, known as "chemistries," specifically for GM's future electric vehicles (EVs).According to Yonhap News Agency, the prismatic battery cells, characterized by their flat, rectangular shape, promise efficient packaging within battery modules and packs, potentially reducing EV costs and weight. LGES's achievement in developing prismatic battery cells will position it as the world's first battery manufacturer to offer all three cell form factors: pouch-type, cylindrical, and prismatic."Together with GM, we look forward to deepening our collaboration to drive the right chemistry and battery combinations for continued growth in the EV market," stated Suh Won-joon, executive vice president and head of LGES' advanced automotive battery division. The partnership with GM is not new, a s LGES has maintained a 14-year battery technology collaboration with the Detroit-based company.Currently, LGES operates battery cell plants in Ohio and Tennessee under the joint venture with GM, with a third plant scheduled to start operations in Michigan next year. Kurt Kelty, GM's vice president of battery cell and pack, emphasized the importance of the collaboration, stating, "We are focused on optimizing our battery technology by developing the right battery chemistries and form factors to improve EV performance, enhance safety, and reduce costs."LGES is committed to providing efficient and safe power solutions with its expanded product portfolio, aiming to support global mass EV adoption by addressing diverse needs across various EV segments.
