Seoul: LG Uplus Corp., South Korea's third-largest wireless carrier, has announced a partnership with Amazon Web Services Inc. (AWS) to develop localized artificial intelligence (AI) cloud services.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the partnership agreement was signed during last week's Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2025. Both companies are set to collaborate in areas such as Korean sovereign cloud development, AI platforms and solutions, and AI consulting.
As an initial step, LG Uplus and AWS, a cloud computing subsidiary of Amazon, will co-develop a Korean sovereign cloud. This initiative aims to support the AI transition of public, financial, and high-tech businesses in South Korea. A sovereign cloud ensures that data is stored, processed, and operated within a country, maintaining data sovereignty and compliance with local regulations.
Next, the companies plan to jointly develop a "work agent" to optimize LG Uplus' own small large language model (LLM), ixi-Gen, alongside AWS' LLM, Nova. This collaboration is intended to help Korean corporations adopt AI services more efficiently.
Additionally, LG Uplus will join AWS' AI consulting organization as a consulting partner, with a focus on sovereign cloud solutions and data security. The companies plan to continue their collaboration to enhance cloud security and AI-driven business solutions.
