Seoul: The main opposition Democratic Party (DP) has intensified its demand for acting President Han Duck-soo to appoint Ma Eun-hyuk as a Constitutional Court justice by the end of Tuesday. This move is seen as crucial as the court is on the brink of delivering a verdict on the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol.
According to Yonhap News Agency, DP floor leader Park Chan-dae issued a stern warning during a press conference, emphasizing the urgency of confirming the opposition-recommended candidate. He cautioned that failure to do so by the day's end would compel the DP to undertake significant parliamentary actions to avert a constitutional crisis.
Park has previously alluded to the possibility of a second impeachment attempt against Han and other key officials, including Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok, should the appointment not be made. The current composition of the Constitutional Court requires the agreement of at least six of its eight standing judges to maintain Yoon's impeachment.
In contrast, Rep. Kweon Seong-dong, representing the ruling People Power Party, has called for an expedited decision from the court regarding Yoon's impeachment. Kweon criticized the DP's actions, describing them as a "collective madness" that needs resolution.
The backdrop to these developments is President Yoon's impeachment on December 14, following his unsuccessful attempt to declare martial law.
