Incheon: A Marine Corps sergeant was shot and killed on Saturday while on duty at a military unit located on an island off the west coast of South Korea. The 21-year-old sergeant was discovered with a gunshot wound to the forehead behind the wheel of his vehicle, as reported by the military.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the sergeant, serving as a transport soldier, had been deployed earlier that day for a coastal search operation on Daecheong Island, situated approximately 30 kilometers west of Seoul. Officials noted that he was critically injured when found and was pronounced dead around 9 a.m. before he could be transported to a hospital for treatment.
The Marine Corps stated that the shooting likely occurred around 7:03 a.m. and confirmed that the round fired was live. However, the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear, with authorities uncertain if the incident was the result of an accidental discharge. In response, military police and local police have launched a joint investigation to ascertain the exact cause of the incident.
This tragic event adds to a series of firearm-related incidents within the military. Previous cases include the suicide of an Army sergeant first class at a front-line guard post on August 23 and a similar incident involving a captain at the Korea Army Academy in Yeongcheon on September 2.
