Seoul: A North Korean defector was sentenced to a suspended prison term on Monday for his attempt to return to North Korea in a stolen bus. The 30-something man received a two-year prison sentence, suspended for three years, after stealing a bus from a garage in Paju, approximately 30 kilometers northwest of Seoul. He attempted to drive the vehicle across a bridge near the inter-Korean border in October.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the Goyang branch of the Uijeongbu District Court stated in its ruling that the defendant did not appear to have committed the crime with any political intention of praising or sympathizing with North Korea. The court noted that the incident partly reflects the challenges faced by North Korean defectors who have settled in South Korea, highlighting a broader issue that the nation must address as it prepares for potential reunification.
The defector, who was apprehended after ramming the bus into a barricade on the Tongil Bridge, originally defected alone in 2011. He has reportedly faced significant challenges in making a living in South Korea. His situation deteriorated further after a leg injury in 2018, and he was evicted from his accommodation in September for failing to pay rent. His longing for family in the North intensified his struggles.
A notable influence on his decision to attempt the crossing was the case of U.S. soldier Travis King, who successfully crossed into North Korea in 2023.
