N. Korea and Russia Begin Construction of Road Bridge Over Tumen River

Seoul: North Korea and Russia have commenced the construction of a road bridge across the Tumen River, marking a significant development in their bilateral relations. The construction was inaugurated on Wednesday, as reported by a Russian news agency, highlighting the growing cooperation between the two countries.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the ceremony for the bridge construction was conducted virtually. Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin participated via video link, where he emphasized the importance of this project as a milestone in Russian-Korean relations. North Korean Premier Pak Thae-song also took part in the ceremony.

The decision to build this motorway bridge was made in June of the previous year, with both countries agreeing on a completion target by the end of 2026. This decision followed a comprehensive strategic partnership treaty aimed at enhancing cooperation between the two nations in multiple sectors.

Tass news agency quoted Mishustin, stating that the bridge represents a mutual commitment to strengthening friendly and neighborly ties and boosting transregional cooperation. Earlier, South Korea's unification ministry had indicated the likelihood of a launching ceremony, based on satellite imagery showing new facilities and a heliport on the Russian side, and preparations for fireworks on the North Korean side.

Once completed, the 850-meter road bridge is expected to significantly improve the movement of goods and people between North Korea and Russia. This development comes as both countries continue to enhance their collaboration in various domains, including military and economic sectors. Currently, the only link between them is a railway bridge connecting North Korea's Tumen River and Russia's Khasan stations, which has been operational since August 1959.
