Seoul: North Korea has initiated the renovation of tombs belonging to Chinese soldiers who fought on its side during the Korean War. This move comes as both nations prepare to observe the 75th anniversary of China's involvement in the conflict, as reported by state media on Thursday.
According to Yonhap News Agency, a ceremony was conducted the previous day to commence the renovation work at a cemetery dedicated to Chinese volunteer soldiers in Sinpyong, located in North Hwanghae Province. The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) detailed that this initiative is part of the broader commemorative activities for the anniversary, which marks the entry of Chinese troops into the war on October 25, 1950, when they achieved their first military success.
The ceremony was attended by a vice minister from North Korea's urban construction ministry, Chinese Ambassador Wang Yajun, and a delegation consisting of Chinese veterans and their families. This presence underscores the significance both countries place on remembering their shared history during the Korean War.
Furthermore, the Chinese Embassy in North Korea announced that a Chinese delegation visiting the country intends to pay respects at the gravesites of Chinese war heroes located in Kaesong, Anju, and other areas. Discussions regarding the upkeep of these commemorative sites are also planned between the Chinese delegation and North Korean officials.
