Pyongyang: North Korea has conducted its first firing tests of key weapons systems for the country's new destroyer, with its leader Kim Jong-un calling for accelerating the navy's nuclear armament, state media reported Wednesday. North Korea conducted a test-firing of the destroyer's supersonic strategic cruise missiles and anti-aircraft missiles as well as automatic guns on Monday, according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).
According to Yonhap News Agency, the country also carried out a firing test of ship-to-ship tactical guided weapons, the ship's naval gun, and electronic jamming guns the following day, it added. This marked the first known performance test of such weapon systems for North Korea's new 5,000-ton multipurpose destroyer named Choe Hyon, which was launched last week.
The North's leader laid out tasks for accelerating the navy's nuclear armament, calling for protecting his country from military threats and enhancing national defense and maritime sovereignty, the KCNA said.
