Pyongyang: North Korea has unveiled a new dining boat service on the Taedong River, allowing tourists to enjoy meals while floating through the heart of Pyongyang. This initiative was reported by a pro-North Korean news outlet on Monday.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the Choson Sinbo, a pro-North Korean newspaper based in Japan, highlighted the popularity of the sightseeing round boat service among tourists on the Taedong River. The boats, featuring awning roofs, are available in two sizes, accommodating either six or twelve passengers. These boats are unique as they are steered by the passengers themselves and come equipped with barbecue tables at the center.
The report included insights from a transportation ministry official who noted the growing civilian demand for the river boat service, particularly among families. The official mentioned that satisfying this demand is challenging, especially on holidays.
The Taedong River has long been a favored destination for both foreign and local tourists in North Korea. In 2013, a cruise boat service was launched on the river, capable of carrying up to 300 passengers and featuring a dining hall.
This new dining boat service is part of North Korea's broader strategy to develop tourism programs. These initiatives aim to earn foreign currency and promote domestic consumption, alongside encouraging the circulation of local currency.
