Seoul: South Korea's military announced on Friday that it had apprehended a North Korean individual who illegally crossed the inter-Korean land border on Thursday night.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the individual traversed the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) situated in the midwestern sector of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). The Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) reported the incident and confirmed that relevant authorities are planning a joint investigation to uncover more details about the individual and the reasons behind the crossing.
The JCS noted that the military detected the individual in the MDL area, executed a standard operation to guide and secure them, and emphasized that no unusual military activities from North Korea have been observed following the incident. However, details about the individual's identity and motive remain undisclosed.
The Demilitarized Zone serves as a 4-kilometer-wide buffer separating North and South Korea, heavily fortified on both sides to prevent unauthorized crossings.
