Pyongyang: A North Korean delegation, led by the chief of the country's major military school, has left for Russia, Pyongyang's state media reported Tuesday, amid deepening military cooperation between the two nations.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Kim Kum-chol, president of Kim Il Sung Military University, departed Pyongyang the previous day to visit the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Russia. The visit appears to be focused on enhancing exchanges and cooperation between military education institutions of North Korea and Russia.
The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) did not disclose the specific purpose of the delegation's trip. However, the visit aligns with ongoing efforts to strengthen military ties between the two countries. Kim Kum-chol's last known visit to Russia was in July 2024, following the signing of a mutual defense treaty between North Korea and Russia in June of the same year.
Kim Il Sung Military University, named after North Korea's late founder, serves as a training institution for military officers. Notably, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is known to have attended courses at the university after his studies in Switzerland.
Kim Kum-chol, the president of the military school, was added to the United States' sanctions list in December last year due to North Korea's support for Russia's war against Ukraine.
