N. Korea’s Kim Urges Enhancement of Naval Power to Counter Enemy’s Provocations

Pyongyang: North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has inspected the country’s first 5,000-ton destroyer, advocating for the strengthening of naval combat capabilities to effectively deter and counter enemy provocations, state media reported Monday.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Kim visited the Choe Hyon destroyer on Sunday, accompanied by key party and government officials. This visit was part of his schedule related to a military hardware exhibition, as reported by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

In an effort to enhance its naval power, North Korea unveiled the 5,000-ton multipurpose destroyer, Choe Hyon, in April. During his visit, Kim emphasized that the navy’s capabilities should be utilized in the vast ocean to deter, counter, and punish enemy provocations, thereby defending the nation’s sovereignty and security interests.

The KCNA further reported Kim’s assertion that the Workers’ Party would persist in its efforts without any stagnation to ensure the expansion and growth of the naval combat force, which is crucial for defending national rights.

North Korea has highlighted that the Choe Hyon destroyer is equipped with supersonic strategic cruise missiles, tactical ballistic missiles, and other strike means. In June, North Korea launched another destroyer of the same class, the Kang Kon, after repairing damage it sustained when it tipped over during its initial launch attempt in May.

The country has been concentrating on strengthening its naval force, with plans to construct another 5,000-ton destroyer by October 2026.
