Nation Hit by Strongest Cold Wave Yet This Winter

The strongest cold wave of this year's winter season so far took hold of the nation on Thursday.

According to the Korea Meteorological Administration(KMA), cold wave advisories were issued in northern areas of the Gyeonggi and Gangwon provinces as the mercury plummeted to as low as minus 15-point-one degrees Celsius in Cheorwon County in the morning.

Lows in Seoul also plunged to minus seven-point-five degrees Celsius, the lowest temperature recorded so far for the city this winter.

The temperature in the southern port city of Busan also dropped below zero for the first time this season.

In the afternoon, daytime highs on Thursday will reach around zero degrees in Seoul, three degrees in Gwangju and six degrees in Busan.

The KMA said the west coastal areas in South Chungcheong Province and the Jeolla provinces, as well as Jeju Island, will receive one to five centimeters of snow by Friday, while clear skies are forecast for the rest of the country accompanied by frigid conditions.

The weather agency predicted the mercury will drop further on Friday, with many of the regions expected to see temperatures fall below minus ten degrees.
