Seoul: Newly appointed Finance Minister Koo Yun-cheol on Monday pledged to prioritize national interest and practical outcomes in upcoming tariff negotiations with the United States, saying he will seek to visit Washington at the earliest date possible. Koo emphasized his commitment to advancing South Korea's interests in discussions with U.S. officials, with the goal of aligning negotiations with national priorities.
According to Yonhap News Agency, discussions are ongoing to finalize the schedule for Koo's visit, with less than two weeks remaining before the August 1 deadline for the tariff negotiations with the Donald Trump administration. Koo expressed his intention to meet with U.S. counterparts promptly to present South Korea's position and foster mutual understanding to ensure the negotiations proceed favorably for South Korea.
In addition to tariff discussions, Koo highlighted the urgent need for price stabilization, particularly concerning daily necessities affected by recent flood damage. This reflects his broader agenda of addressing immediate economic challenges.
Koo also stressed the importance of innovation and collaboration during his tenure, aiming to lead the Ministry of Economy and Finance through a transformative period. In his inauguration address, he called on ministry officials to embrace innovative ideas and integrate them into their work to achieve tangible results.
He further underscored the necessity for enhanced cooperation with related ministries and a focus on problem-solving. The minister announced that employees who generate creative ideas will receive exceptional rewards, reinforcing the ministry's dedication to fostering a culture of innovation.
