Toronto: Park Chan-wook’s satirical thriller “No Other Choice” has won the International People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), organizers said Sunday (local time). The newly established award is determined by audience votes for the most popular feature film outside North America.
According to Yonhap News Agency, TIFF’s highest honor, the People’s Choice Award, which is often seen as a major Oscar predictor, went to Chloe Zhao’s “Hamnet.” “No Other Choice,” adapted from the mystery novel “The Ax” by American writer Donald E. Westlake, is a dark comedy about Man-soo, a middle-aged man who resorts to extreme measures to secure a new job after being fired from a paper company.
As of Monday, the South Korean film has earned a perfect 100 percent score on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, based on 38 reviews praising the film’s blend of dark humor and social commentary. Additionally, the film’s lead actor, Lee Byung-hun, received the Special Tribute Award at the festival, marking the first time a Korean actor has been recognized with this honor.
“No Other Choice,” which made its North American premiere at TIFF as a gala presentation, is set to open the 30th Busan International Film Festival, scheduled to run from Sept. 17-26.
