Seoul: South Korean troops deployed overseas have commenced voting as part of the out-of-country voting process for the upcoming June 3 presidential election, the military announced on Friday.
According to Yonhap News Agency, approximately 1,000 troops stationed overseas began casting their votes on Tuesday, with the process set to continue through Sunday. The Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) reported that polling stations have been set up within the Dongmyeong unit in Lebanon and the Hanbit unit in South Sudan. Officials from the defense and foreign ministries, along with the election watchdog, have been dispatched to these locations to serve as observers.
The JCS further stated that other service members will have the opportunity to vote at nearby South Korean overseas missions. This overseas voting initiative extends to South Korean nationals living or temporarily residing abroad, having commenced on Tuesday. More than 258,000 South Korean nationals, including those registered as absentee voters, are eligible to vote at 223 polling stations in 118 countries.
