Seoul: The main opposition People Power Party (PPP) elected three-term lawmaker Song Eon-seog as its new floor leader on Monday. Song secured his position by defeating Reps. Kim Sung-won and Lee Hung-seung, garnering 60 votes out of 106, thus eliminating the need for a second round of voting.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Song's new role as the floor leader of the main opposition, which holds 107 seats in the National Assembly, comes with significant responsibilities. He will need to address the challenges posed by the ruling party's legislative initiatives, prepare for an upcoming national convention to choose new party leadership, and manage internal tensions following the PPP's recent presidential election defeat.
Song, who represents a constituency in North Gyeongsang Province-a traditional PPP stronghold-does not have strong ties to any particular faction within the party. However, he is generally seen as being aligned with the pro-Yoon Suk Yeol faction from the previous Yoon administration. Within the party, Song is recognized as a leading expert on economic and fiscal policy, having served as a former vice minister of the finance ministry.
