PPP Shortlists 4 Contenders in Primary for Party Leadership

Seoul: The main opposition People Power Party (PPP) on Thursday finalized four candidates, including former presidential contender Kim Moon-soo, to run for the party leadership in a national convention set for later this month, party officials said. The PPP announced the results of a primary held from Tuesday to Wednesday to determine the candidates for its party convention, scheduled for Aug. 22, to elect its next leader.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the final candidates are Reps. Jang Dong-hyeok, Cho Kyoung-tae, and Ahn Cheol-soo, in addition to Kim. The results were determined by combining 50 percent of the votes from dues-paying party members and 50 percent from a public opinion poll, officials said.

Of the 12 candidates who entered the preliminary race for the party's Supreme Council, eight advanced to the main race. All four candidates who ran for positions on the party's youth leadership will also advance to the party convention, the PPP said.
