Gyeongju: President Lee Jae Myung on Saturday urged the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) member economies to embrace significant changes driven by artificial intelligence (AI) as an opportunity to contribute to inclusive economic growth. Lee introduced South Korea's initiative, titled "AI-Based Society for All," during the Retreat Session of the APEC summit in the southeastern city of Gyeongju.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Lee articulated South Korea's vision for a global AI society where technological progress benefits are accessible to all. He emphasized the country's commitment to implementing policies that align with this vision. Lee highlighted South Korea's pursuit of an "AI transformation" at the national level, aiming to foster an ecosystem conducive to AI innovation.
Lee mentioned plans to expand infrastructure, such as large-scale data centers, and implement regulatory reforms to enable global companies to innovate freely. He also called for collective efforts to tackle challenges posed by demographic shifts, including a low birth rate and an aging population, proposing a joint framework for APEC members.
Lee pointed out that demographic changes impact various societal aspects, including economic growth, the labor market, education, and welfare, necessitating comprehensive solutions. To address AI and demographic changes, South Korea is focusing on cultural and creative industries as potential new growth engines.
During the session, leaders are expected to adopt the "Gyeongju Declaration," outlining the outcomes of this year's discussions, along with two documents addressing AI and demographic challenges. Lee will formally hand over the APEC chairmanship to Chinese President Xi Jinping, whose country will host next year's summit. Following a group photo session, Lee is scheduled to hold a press conference as APEC chair to brief on this year's main outcomes.
