President Lee to Address U.N. General Assembly and Lead AI Debate

New york: President Lee Jae Myung is set to make his inaugural appearance at the U.N. General Assembly later this month since assuming office in June, as announced by the presidential office on Tuesday. Lee is scheduled to deliver a speech on September 23 during the 80th session of the General Assembly at the U.N. headquarters in New York, according to presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the address will focus on South Korea’s journey to overcome a democratic crisis and outline the government’s strategies for addressing key global issues, particularly concerning the Korean Peninsula. Kang highlighted that South Korea will utilize this platform to share its experiences and vision with the international community.

In addition to these responsibilities, South Korea has assumed the rotating presidency of the U.N. Security Council for the month of September. This marks the country’s first time holding the post in 15 months and the fifth time since becoming a United Nations member in 1991. In this capacity, President Lee will preside over an open debate on artificial intelligence (AI) and its implications for global peace and security on September 24. This session will be the first led by a South Korean president and will examine the impact of rapid AI advancements on international security, while exploring collaborative responses from the global community.

Lee’s active participation is expected to underscore South Korea’s status as a “trusted partner” in international affairs and strengthen its leadership role on the global diplomatic stage, as per Kang’s statements.
