Ottawa: The presidential office announced on Monday that it is actively monitoring the situation concerning a potential summit between President Lee Jae Myung and U.S. President Donald Trump in Canada. This development comes as President Trump has unexpectedly decided to cut his participation in the Group of Seven (G7) summit short.
According to Yonhap News Agency, efforts have been underway for President Lee to have his first face-to-face meeting with President Trump on the sidelines of the G7 summit. However, the White House has confirmed that President Trump will return to the U.S. on Monday night due to the escalating Israel-Iran conflict, which has put the planned meeting in jeopardy.
"A summit had been effectively planned for tomorrow, but we are currently assessing the situation," a presidential official informed reporters, highlighting the uncertainty surrounding the scheduled meeting between Lee and Trump.
In addition to the potential meeting with President Trump, there have been discussions about President Lee meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba during the G7 summit. The presidential official noted that there has been "concrete progress" in arranging the summit with Prime Minister Ishiba.
