Prosecutors Demand 20-Year Prison Term for Suspect in Seoul Subway Arson

Seoul: Prosecutors on Tuesday demanded a 20-year prison term for a man suspected of setting fire to a Seoul subway train in May.

According to Yonhap News Agency, prosecutors sought the sentence during the final hearing for the case at Seoul Southern District Court. They also requested an order for the suspect to wear an electronic anklet for 10 years and face three years of probation.

The 67-year-old suspect, surnamed Won, is accused of pouring gasoline on the floor of a moving train between Yeouinaru Station and Mapo Station on Subway Line 5 on May 31. He allegedly set the train on fire, attempting to kill 160 passengers, including himself, and injuring six of them.

Won reportedly committed the crime out of anger over the outcome of his divorce lawsuit.
