Prosecutors Indict Teacher for Murder of 8-Year-Old Student in Daejeon

Daejeon: Prosecutors on Thursday indicted a teacher accused of stabbing an 8-year-old student to death at an elementary school in the central city of Daejeon last month. The tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the community, sparking discussions on school safety and mental health.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the Daejeon District Prosecutors Office announced that Myeong Jae-wan, 48, was indicted with physical detention on charges including kidnapping and trading for gain. The indictment follows a series of investigations into the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident.

Myeong is accused of fatally stabbing the first-grade girl in an empty classroom at an elementary school on February 10. Following the incident, Myeong was hospitalized for over 20 days due to self-inflicted injuries and was subsequently taken into custody earlier this month. This came after the court issued an arrest warrant for her.

Prosecutors have described the case as an "abnormal motive crime," highlighting that the perpetrator allegedly murdered the young girl to resolve personal resentment stemming from family conflicts and challenges at work. The prosecutors noted that Myeong reportedly had a fear of abandonment and struggled with emotional regulation.

In a related development, police have decided to disclose the mug shot and personal information of the suspect on its website, citing the severity of the crime as justification for their decision. The case has drawn significant public attention, raising questions about the measures needed to prevent such incidents in the future.
