Seoul: Ahn Cheol-soo, a four-term lawmaker from the main opposition People Power Party (PPP), has officially announced his candidacy for the leadership of the conservative party. This announcement comes three weeks after his unexpected resignation as the head of the PPP's innovation committee, following conflicts with the party's leadership regarding his advocacy for a personnel reshuffle.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Ahn, who is often regarded as a non-mainstream figure within his party, made his intentions clear during a press conference held at the National Assembly. He articulated his vision for leadership by emphasizing the need for internal reform and a commitment to challenge the current political strategies of President Lee Jae Myung's Democratic Party.
Ahn Cheol-soo, a notable software entrepreneur, had previously supported the impeachment of former President Yoon Suk Yeol due to Yoon's controversial attempt at martial law. Ahn was initially appointed to lead the innovation committee as the PPP struggled with political instability following Yoon's removal from office and the party's defeat in the June 3 presidential election. However, he resigned from the committee just five days later.
During the press conference, Ahn disclosed that he received a text message from a special counsel team investigating the martial law attempt by Yoon, inviting him for questioning. He expressed concern that this move could be seen as an effort to label the entire PPP as being involved in insurrection, despite his opposition to martial law and support for Yoon's impeachment.
The PPP is set to elect its new leader during a national convention scheduled for August 22.
