Rep. Jang Dong-hyeok, Close Ally of Ex-President Yoon, Elected as PPP’s New Leader

Seoul: Rep. Jang Dong-hyeok, a close ally of ousted President Yoon Suk Yeol, was elected as the new leader of the main opposition People Power Party (PPP) on Tuesday. Jang secured his leadership by defeating former presidential candidate Kim Moon-soo by 2,367 votes in a closely watched runoff election.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Jang's victory comes at a time when the conservative party has been grappling with internal strife. This turmoil was exacerbated by former President Yoon Suk Yeol's failed attempt to impose martial law in December, followed by the party's significant defeat in the June presidential election. The election of Jang as the new leader is seen as a pivotal moment for the PPP as it seeks to recuperate and strategize for future political challenges.
