Seoul: Rep. Kang Sun-woo of the ruling Democratic Party has been nominated to serve as the Lee Jae Myung government's first minister of gender equality and family. Kang, a two-term lawmaker, has an extensive background in human development and family studies, having earned a doctorate from the University of Wisconsin and served as a professor at South Dakota State University until 2016.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the 47-year-old Kang hails from Daegu, where she completed her undergraduate studies in English Education at Ewha Woman's University. Kang is also noted for her personal connection to issues of developmental disability, as she has a child with such a condition.
During her initial term in the National Assembly, Kang was the party's spokesperson and deputy floor leader. She contributed significantly to the health and welfare, gender equality and family, and budget and accounts committees. Notably, as vice-chairperson of the National Assembly Health and Welfare Committee, Kang played a crucial role in negotiating the National Pension Fund reform bill and addressing the increase in medical school admissions.
