Seoul: The interim leader of the ruling People Power Party (PPP) emphasized the need for enhanced security collaboration with France and other "like-minded" nations, in light of increasing global uncertainties following the inauguration of U.S. President Donald Trump. This call for cooperation was made during discussions with French Ambassador to South Korea Philippe Bertoux at the National Assembly.
According to Yonhap News Agency, Kwon Young-se, the interim leader, stressed the importance of not only strengthening security ties but also economic cooperation between countries like France and South Korea. Kwon underscored South Korea's dedication to supporting Ukraine, highlighting that the conflict in Kyiv has significant global implications extending beyond a single region in Europe.
Kwon further stated South Korea's commitment to security, particularly in dealing with North Korea, which is believed to possess nuclear weapons. Ambassador Bertoux echoed these concerns, pointing out the escalating crisis on the Korean Peninsula due to North Korea's continued nuclear and missile advancements and its growing cooperation with Russia. He described the situation as increasingly complex and challenging.
The meeting between Kwon and Bertoux also included discussions on enhancing cooperation in various technological fields, such as nuclear power, semiconductors, and artificial intelligence. Both parties expressed a mutual interest in strengthening ties in these areas to address current and future challenges.
