S. Korea and UNHCR Discuss Global Refugee Crisis Response


Seoul: The foreign ministry announced on Thursday that it has engaged in discussions with the Office of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to explore solutions to the global refugee crisis exacerbated by recent geopolitical conflicts.



According to Yonhap News Agency, Deputy Minister for Multilateral and Global Affairs Kweon Ki-hwan met with Filippo Grandi, the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, in Seoul to address the increasing number of global refugees. The ministry highlighted that the number of forcibly displaced individuals worldwide has exceeded 120 million, influenced by the escalation of armed conflicts and geopolitical tensions in different regions.



During the discussions, Kweon emphasized South Korea’s commitment to actively contributing to the refugee issue. As a member of the UNHCR Executive Committee and a significant donor country, South Korea intends to continue its support in addressing the challenges related to the refugee crisis, as stated by the ministry.
