S. Korea, Britain set to host AI Seoul Summit to discuss safety issues

SEOUL, South Korea and Britain are set to kick off a global summit on artificial intelligence Tuesday to address risks and opportunities associated with the rapidly evolving technology and present a framework for the global AI governance.

The AI Seoul Summit, themed “Building on the AI Safety Summit: Towards an Innovative and Inclusive Future,” will feature a mix of virtual and in-person sessions Tuesday and Wednesday. The event will draw leaders from major countries, representatives from leading tech firms and global organizations.

The summit follows the inaugural global AI safety summit held in Britain last November, where 28 countries and the European Union adopted the Bletchley Declaration, the first global guidelines on AI safety.

Later in the day, President Yoon Suk Yeol and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will host the virtual leaders’ session, with participation from the Group of Seven countries — the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Japan — as well as Singapore and Australia
.

Representatives from the United Nations, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, as well as major tech companies, including ChatGPT maker OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, Meta, Samsung and Naver, were also invited.

In a joint article published Monday, the two leaders said the second AI summit aims to establish global AI governance principles that promote innovation, safety and inclusivity. They also emphasized the need for companies to make efforts to “avoid a race to the bottom” in AI development.

On the second day, a ministers’ session will be held at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology to discuss action to strengthen AI safety and achieve sustainability and resilience.
