Palm beach: South Korea’s top business group chiefs recently highlighted their U.S. investment activities during a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump at a golf event in Florida, as reported by industry sources on Monday.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the prominent business figures, including Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong, SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won, Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chair Euisun Chung, LG Group Chairman Koo Kwang-mo, and Hanwha Group Vice Chairman Kim Dong-kwan, participated in the event held on Saturday at the Trump International Golf Club located in Trump’s private Mar-a-Lago estate. The event was hosted by SoftBank Group founder Masayoshi Son, and business leaders from Japan and Taiwan were also in attendance.
The South Korean business leaders reportedly did not play golf in the same group as Trump, but they met with him after the event. During the meeting, they briefed Trump on their current and future investment activities in the United States. Trump emphasized the significance of bilateral cooperation in the shipbuilding sector and sought continued support from South Korean companies.
“There wasn’t any direct discussion on tariff issues,” an industry source noted. The meeting was seen as an opportunity for the business leaders to build trust with President Trump for the benefit of both nations.
The South Korean executives also expressed their anticipation for Trump’s upcoming visit to South Korea for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Gyeongju later this month. Hyundai Motor Group’s chief informed Trump that both the government and business community in South Korea are “working together to prepare thoroughly” for his visit.
This meeting took place amidst ongoing tariff negotiations between Seoul and Washington, and industry observers believe it offered a strategic opportunity for South Korean executives to engage directly with Trump regarding their American business interests.
