Seoul: A South Korean military transport plane, identified as a C-130, unexpectedly entered Japan's air defense identification zone earlier this month, leading to Japan deploying a fighter jet in response, as reported by South Korea's military on Thursday.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the C-130 aircraft was on its way to Guam for a military exercise scheduled for July 13. It was forced to alter its course and head towards Kadena Air Base in Okinawa due to severe weather conditions. The diversion, however, was not properly communicated to Japanese authorities, prompting a swift response from Japan's Air Self-Defense Force.
After South Korean officials provided clarification regarding the circumstances, the transport plane was given permission to make an emergency landing for refueling at the Okinawa air base. The aircraft subsequently continued its journey towards Guam.
The flight path of the C-130 was complicated from the outset. The plane was already on an extended, rerouted course due to a previous communication failure that prevented it from obtaining permission to transit through Japanese airspace. In response to the incident, the defense ministry has initiated an investigation to better understand and address the communication lapses.
