S. Korea’s Finance Minister Engages in Crucial Trade Talks in Washington

Washington: South Korea's Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok arrived in Washington Tuesday to engage in high-level trade discussions with the United States this week. The talks aim to address the possible impacts of the Trump administration's recently announced or anticipated tariffs.According to Yonhap News Agency, Choi, upon his arrival at an airport near the U.S. capital, emphasized his commitment to the talks, stating he would "do my best" to strengthen the South Korea-U.S. alliance. Choi, alongside Industry Minister Ahn Duk-geun, plans to meet with U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer for the "two plus two" trade consultations scheduled for Thursday. The meeting follows the Trump administration's imposition of country-specific "reciprocal" tariffs, including a 25 percent duty on South Korea, which was paused for 90 days shortly after being announced. Choi highlighted the importance of understanding U.S. interests and effectively communicating South Korea's sta nce to foster mutual understanding.Choi is the highest-ranking Seoul official to visit the U.S. since Trump took office in January. During his visit, he will also attend the Group of 20 (G20) finance ministers' meeting. Analysts suggest the talks with Bessent and Greer might cover a broad spectrum of trade issues, such as new U.S. tariffs and non-tariff barriers like South Korea's ban on American beef from cattle over 30 months old.Additionally, discussions might include South Korea's financial responsibility for the 28,500 U.S. Forces Korea personnel, as Trump has indicated a preference for addressing multiple bilateral issues simultaneously. The trade discussions are set to occur at the Treasury Department near the White House, minimizing the chance of an unexpected appearance by Trump.Trump's recent surprise visit to trade talks with Japan, where he later claimed "big progress," remains fresh in memory, adding a layer of anticipation to the upcoming U.S.-South Korea trade negotiations.
