Samsung SDI Partners with Hyundai and Kia to Develop Robot-Specific Batteries

Seoul: Samsung SDI Co., South Korea's second-largest battery maker, announced a strategic partnership with Hyundai Motor Co. and its affiliate Kia Corp. to develop advanced robot-specific batteries. Through this collaboration, the companies aim to significantly enhance energy density, output, and usage time in robotic applications.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the partnership was formalized through a memorandum of understanding (MOU) aimed at producing high-performance batteries tailored for robots. This initiative addresses a current gap in the robotics industry, where most sectors rely on batteries designed for power tools or light electric vehicles.

The collaboration will involve Samsung SDI improving high-capacity materials to increase energy density and optimizing battery design to enhance efficiency. Hyundai and Kia will focus on evaluating the application and performance enhancements of these newly developed batteries in robotic systems.

Samsung SDI's Executive Vice President Cho Han-jae emphasized the potential for introducing differentiated technologies and high-quality products to the robot battery market through this partnership. Vice President Hyun Dong-jin of the Robotics LAB at Hyundai and Kia highlighted the anticipated acceleration in developing competitive robot products that cater to a wide range of consumer needs, thanks to the synergy between the companies' technologies.
