Seoul shares nearly flat in late morning trade

South Korean stocks traded almost flat late Wednesday morning as major shares traded in mixed territory.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) shed 0.68 point, or 0.03 percent, to 2,601.91 as of 11:20 a.m.

Tech behemoth Samsung Electronics rose 1.17 percent, but its chipmaking rival SK hynix fell 0.64 percent.

Top automaker Hyundai Motor decreased 0.45 percent, and its sister Kia dropped 0.42 percent.

Leading chemicals maker LG Chem declined 0.2 percent, and major oil refiner SK Innovation added 0.15 percent.

Battery shares were bullish, with LG Energy Solution rising 0.96 percent and Samsung SDI gaining 1.79 percent.

The local currency was trading at 1,293.3 won against the U.S. dollar, up 1.2 won from the previous session’s close.
