Seoul: The government will invest 31 billion won (US$22.7 million) by 2028 in developing core technologies for smart ports as part of efforts to strengthen the competitiveness of South Korea's shipping industry, the oceans ministry said Monday. The investment will focus on developing key equipment and technologies necessary for building smart port facilities, such as automated cargo handling machinery and unmanned vehicles for cargo transport.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries has outlined the country's commitment to transforming traditional ports into smart ports to enhance shipping capabilities. This initiative follows the opening of a fully automated terminal at a port in the southeastern city of Busan last year.
Oceans Minister Kang Do-hyung emphasized the importance of smart port technology for the sustainable development of the port industry. He pledged government efforts to provide technological support for the expansion of smart ports in Korea, highlighting the strategic significance of these advancements in maintaining the nation's competitive edge in shipping.
