Seoul to raise terror alert level for S. Korea-Africa summit

The terror alert level for the Seoul metropolitan area will be raised before and during South Korea’s upcoming summit with African nations to ensure the safety of leaders attending the multilateral gatherings, the government said Friday.

South Korea is set to host the inaugural summit with African nations from Tuesday to Wednesday at KINTEX in Ilsan, north of Seoul, and in the capital city, with the attendance of delegations from 48 countries. A welcome dinner will be held Monday.

The Office for Government Policy Coordination said it will upgrade the terror alert level for Seoul and Gyeonggi Province from the current “attention” to “caution” on Saturday and further lift the level to “warning” from Sunday to Wednesday to bolster security around the event venues.

The terror alert levels are classified into four stages: attention, caution, warning and severe, depending on the degree of threat.
